Shoulder pain
What is shoulder pain?
Shoulder pain is a common reason why many people seek out a physical therapist. The pain can occur acutely after an injury, or develop gradually over time due to incorrect loading, sitting still or repetitive use. For some, the pain may be constant, while others experience it only with certain movements, such as lifting their arm, putting on a jacket or sleeping on their shoulder. Because the shoulder is a complex and mobile joint, there are many different causes of pain, and it is important to have a thorough assessment to find the right treatment.
Mapping
We always start with an individual examination and conversation. We want to understand how the pain affects everyday life, what could be the cause, and what kind of function the patient wants to regain. From there, we create a treatment plan that is tailored to needs and goals. Our focus is to find the cause of the pain, and not just alleviate the symptoms.
Treatment
Treatment is tailored to the individual and may include medical exercise therapy, mobility training, manual therapy, stretching or the use of sling training to improve stability and control in the shoulder joint. Guidance in good movement patterns to relieve the area and support during rehabilitation and information about the condition is also central to the treatment. In some cases, we also use tape to relieve and support the muscles.
The way forward
Shoulder pain can be bothersome and limiting, but with the right follow-up and targeted treatment, it is usually entirely possible to become pain-free and regain normal function. With us, you will receive close follow-up and an individual plan to return to everyday life with less pain and more freedom of movement.
