Osteoarthritis
What is osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is a chronic joint disease that affects many people, and it can affect various joints in the body, such as hips, knees, shoulders and fingers. It is caused by an imbalance in the build-up and breakdown of cartilage in the joints, where cartilage gradually weakens or breaks down. This can lead to changes in both joint cartilage, bone tissue and surrounding structures. When the cartilage no longer protects the joint as well, you can experience pain, stiffness and reduced mobility. Many also describe that the symptoms vary from period to period.
Typical symptoms of osteoarthritis
The most common symptoms of osteoarthritis are pain in and around the affected joint, often most noticeable when the joint is under load. Many people also experience stiffness, especially in the morning or after sitting still for a while, which gradually eases when movement begins. The joint may feel swollen or warm, and mobility may be reduced over time.
Treatment of osteoarthritis
Treatment of osteoarthritis is mostly about relieving symptoms, slowing down the progression and maintaining the best possible function in everyday life. Exercise is the most important and effective form of treatment, as it helps to strengthen the muscles around the joint, improve stability and reduce pain. Lifestyle changes, such as weight loss if necessary or adjusting activity levels, can have a positive effect on the symptoms. For some, aids such as insoles, canes or relieving orthoses can make everyday life easier. Medications can be used for periods of pain relief, but are rarely a solution on their own. The goal is always to find a balance between activity and rest, so that mobility, function and quality of life are preserved for as long as possible.
