Rehabilitation after stroke

What is stroke?

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted, either through a blood clot (cerebral infarction) or a bleed (cerebral hemorrhage). This leads to damage to brain tissue and can cause a variety of symptoms, depending on which areas of the brain are affected. Common consequences of a stroke include paralysis or reduced strength in the arms and/or legs, balance problems, reduced coordination, difficulties with speech and language, and in some cases changes in memory, concentration and behavior.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation after a stroke is crucial for regaining function, preventing complications and ensuring the best possible quality of life. Physiotherapy is a central part of this work. The training is adapted individually, based on functional level, goals and needs. It can include, among other things, mobilisation of stiff joints, strength training, walking and balance training, exercises for better coordination and fine motor skills, as well as work on body control and movement patterns. An important goal in rehabilitation is to stimulate remaining function and build new movement strategies where necessary. Many people experience uncertainty and altered body awareness after a stroke, and it takes time to regain confidence in movement. In addition to physical training, it is important to provide guidance in transfers, everyday activities and adaptation of the environment, so that coping and participation in daily life are facilitated.

Phases of rehabilitation

Rehabilitation often takes place in several phases, first in hospital, then in specialized rehabilitation units, and then in the municipal health service or with a private physiotherapist. Research shows that early and structured rehabilitation after stroke leads to better functional recovery and increased independence over time.
