Parkinson's

What is Parkinson’s Disease?
Parkinson’s disease is a chronic and progressive neurological disorder that primarily affects the motor system. It is caused by a gradual loss of dopamine-producing cells in the brain, leading to symptoms such as tremors, muscle stiffness, slow movements, and balance difficulties. The disease develops differently from person to person, and many also experience non-motor symptoms such as sleep disturbances, low mood, and changes in memory or concentration.

Treatment
Although there is currently no cure for Parkinson’s disease, there are effective treatment methods that can help relieve symptoms and maintain function and quality of life over time. Medication is often necessary, but physical activity and physiotherapy also play a crucial role.

Physiotherapy for Parkinson’s Disease
Physiotherapy is an important part of treatment for people with Parkinson’s. The goal is to maintain or improve mobility, strength, balance, and daily function. In the early stages, the focus is often on keeping the body active and preventing future challenges. In later stages, physiotherapy can help with specific difficulties such as a tendency to fall, stiffness, or problems initiating movement.

Our Services
Physiotherapist Ann-Kristin is trained in ParkinsonNet and therefore has special expertise in the treatment and follow-up of Parkinson’s disease. She leads our group program specifically designed for Parkinson’s. In these groups, we focus on functional training with exercises that improve balance, mobility, strength, and coordination. Many find that group training provides extra motivation, a sense of community, and support from others in the same situation. You can read more about the group program under “Group Classes/Courses.”

For those who do not wish to join group training, or for whom it is not suitable, we also offer individual treatment and follow-up. Here we create a personalized training and treatment plan based on needs, goals, and functional level. This can be relevant in both early and later stages of the disease.
